Mary Alice
Coffin
Apr 14, 1960 — Sep 8, 2026
Mary Alice Coffin, a true original and lifelong daughter of Guthrie, Oklahoma, passed away on September 8, 2026, at OU Medical Center from complications of lymphoma. She was 66.
Mary was uniquely herself in every way that mattered. She never met a stranger, never let a friend fight alone, and possessed a gift for making people feel welcome, well fed, and very quickly part of her extended family. A devoted OU football fan and Food Network enthusiast, Mary loved good stories, her hometown, and, most of all, the people who filled her life.
Mary began her education at Abell Country School and remained fond of Abell and its annual summer church camp. She later attended Guthrie Public Schools, where her musical ability earned her a scholarship to Northern Oklahoma College for playing the oboe.
Her working life reflected her natural hospitality. Mary spent many years with the local Safeway and later working as a co-manager and deli manager in Maui, Hawaii. She returned to Guthrie, became co-owner of Granny Had One, and later operated her memorable food truck, I Don't Know & I Don't Care. She also served as President of the Guthrie Chamber of Commerce.
Mary could be found stringing Christmas lights for the Chamber, helping at the food bank, delivering Meals on Wheels, supporting the farmers market, learning the fiddle, or simply greeting people wherever she went.
Mary was warmhearted but never timid. She was loyal, candid, funny, and formidable when circumstances required it. Throughout her life, Mary was a cherished best friend, sister, girlfriend, foster parent, and devoted dog mom to Turk and Red. She loved her family deeply and remained grounded in her church and Bible study. Her generosity was practical rather than ceremonial: she showed up, cooked, worked, served, defended, laughed, and made room for people.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Donald Coffin and her brother, Tristam. She is survived by her mother, Shirley Coffin; her siblings; her nieces and their families; and a remarkable circle of friends and loved ones who became family through Mary's welcoming heart.
Guthrie will be a little quieter without her, but the community she served and the people she loved carry countless pieces of her with them.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Community Church (512 E. Seward Rd., Guthrie, OK 73044).
Mary, we'll keep you in our hearts. You keep the light on.
