Michael Glenn Ryan, age 66, of Guthrie passed away Monday, August 24th after dealing with many health related issues.
Mike's life as a military family member took him from birth in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to New Mexico, Germany, Illinois, and the Philippines, where he graduated from Wagner High School in 1969. During these years, Mike was active in football, and achieved his Black Belt in Judo.
After returning to America in 1970, Mike worked at Furrow's Nursery in Guthrie before moving to Houston, Texas, where he worked as a machinist for Hughes Tools, and later established his own landscaping company for many years. Returning to Guthrie, Mike continued to work in landscaping, studied at the University of Central Oklahoma, and most recently served as a substitute teacher in the Guthrie public school system.
Mike truly loved being a part of Guthrie, and interacting with the many friends he made during his 43 years here. He enjoyed teaching, and running errands for the elderly and people whose mobility was limited. He was especially fond of his affiliation with the Guthrie Kiwanis, and loved helping with their yearly fund-raising auctions. A long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Mike enjoyed greeting parishioners when they arrived for services and developed many long-lasting friendships. He was present at many events sponsored by St. Mary's. Mike also enjoyed photography and took many pictures at sporting events, weddings, and family events. His other hobbies included archery, hunting, and shooting sports. He was an avid supporter of OU football.
Mike's biggest joys came from his daughter and his grandchildren, and watching them grow and become active in Guthrie school sports.
Mike will be greatly missed by his family, daughter Tracie (Ryan) Reed and son in law Stacy and granddaughters Kristyn and Mandy Reed all of Guthrie; sisters Cheryl (Ryan) McClymonds and husband Dr. William McClymonds of West Chester, Ohio; Cathy (Ryan) Withiam and husband Mike of Guthrie; brother Patrick Ryan and wife Barbara of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nieces Christy Withiam, Heather Vrabel and Robyn Sheehan; and nephew Jonathan Ryan.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin (Ed) Ryan and step-mother Audrey Ryan of Guthrie; and mother Joann Carr of El Paso, Texas.
Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 28, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. James Wickersham officiating. Services are under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
Mike's family would like to extend a special thank you and great appreciation to the staff of the Oklahoma Heart Hospital and their attending Physicians, particularly Dr. Ron White.
