Obituary

Jane Berryman passed away December 20, 2020 in Guthrie, Oklahoma, after a brief battle with Covid 19. Born in Morrilton, Arkansas to Emmett and Willard Cheek, Jane grew up in the tiny town of Atkins, known for pecan trees, a pickle factory, and a big red Razorback sign painted on an Ozark mountain bluff nearby.  Although Jane earned a degree in home economics from the University of Central Arkansas, she often rooted for the Razorbacks and could shout, "Sooee!" with the best of them.  Jane met Oscar at the community pool, where he worked as a lifeguard during college breaks. They courted by gentle walks in the Ozarks, swimming, and long love letters. Jane and Oscar married in 1954, raised four children, and remained best friends and square dance partners for life.

Jane was devoted to family, teaching, and church. She loved reading to her children and grandchildren, and made perfect flaky pie crusts filled with their favorites:  peach, blueberry, and coconut.  A master seamstress, Jane taught most of her grandchildren to sew, as well as the many students she trained during her years as home economics teacher at Guthrie Junior High.  After achieving her Master of Arts in Reading Education from University of Central Oklahoma, Jane taught Title 1 at Cotteral Elementary until her retirement in 1999.  A faithful member of Guthrie First United Methodist Church for 46 years, Jane sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Her greatest contribution, however, was the spirit of kindness and joy that she shared with friends, family, and many a lucky stranger in need.

Jane is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Oscar Berryman, Jr., mother, Willard Reynolds Cheek, father, Emmett Cheek, brother, John Emmett Cheek, and grandson, Ben Steiner. She is survived by children Alan and Angie Berryman of Edmond, Joy and Stan Steiner of Jackson, WY, Robert and Shelley Berryman of Guthrie, Lisa and Keith Hoel of Guthrie; grandchildren Ben and Miriam Conrady, Emily Steiner, Lea and Sam Murray, Avi Steiner, Christa and Doug Pierson, Christan and Beau Marchant, Brittney and Brody Jarnagin, Brayden Berryman, Brianna Berryman, Kandace Hoel, Lindy Hoel, Aldin Hoel; great-grandchildren John, Eloise, Bryson, Kirby, and Henry.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Guthrie First United Methodist Church, 224 E. Noble, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044. A Celebration of Life service will be held this spring
