Obituary

Phyllis Elaine Stockton, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in Guthrie, Oklahoma. She was born on December 28, 1941, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Roy Melvin Smith and Susie Mae (Lairson) Smith.

Phyllis was a devoted mother and homemaker who took great pride in caring for her family. During her family’s years of Army life, she put her heart into raising her children and making a home for them. In her younger years, she loved to square dance and enjoyed getting out on the dance floor.

A woman of many talents, Phyllis earned her cosmetology license and was a skilled seamstress. She had an eye for color and detail that showed in the things she made and the way she decorated her home. She especially loved arranging flowers, bringing different colors and textures together and finding just the right place for each bloom. Later in life, she worked as a receptionist for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol where she remained until her retirement.

Living Church of God was a cornerstone of Phyllis’s life. Her faith was dear to her, and she lived it out in ways that were quiet and personal. She wrote letters and sent packages to people in prison and to those who were homebound. There’s a particular kind of comfort in seeing your name on an envelope or a package and realizing someone has been thinking of you. Phyllis took the time to give that comfort to others.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Susie Smith, her daughter, Leslie Mae Jaycox, her siblings, Fred Smith, Freda Smith, and Nancy Oliver, and her grandson Don Avilez, III.

She is survived by her daughter, Shelly Smith and husband Mark, and her son, James Stockton and wife Teresa. She also leaves behind her sister, Joyce Bishop of Missouri, and her grandchildren, Gregory Stockton, Julie Bays and her husband Conner, and Cassaundra Linnebur and husband Jake, and Randal Jaycox, as well as six great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Phyllis’s family would like to thank the staff at Willow Creek Nursing Home and Companion Hospice for the exceptional care they gave her. The kindness and dignity they showed Phyllis meant so much to her family and they will always be grateful for the comfort it brought them to know she was in such good hands.

Phyllis’s family will gather for a private graveside service at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9, 2026, at Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The family is grateful for the love and prayers of all who are remembering Phyllis.
