About Us

Hayes Funeral Home

Our story began in 1927, when Mr. Thomas H. Davis purchased a boarding house at the corner of Noble and Wentz Streets in Guthrie. With vision and compassion, he transformed that building into a place where families could find comfort during life’s hardest moments—Davis Funeral Home.

Mr. Davis dedicated his life to serving the Guthrie community, and in time, his son Lang joined him in the work. Together, they built a legacy of care and commitment. After their passing, the funeral home was entrusted to Jack Miller, who continued that legacy and added his name to the business, creating Davis-Miller Funeral Home.

In 1972, Jack sold the funeral home to J.W. and Sue Altebaumer, a couple deeply rooted in service and community. Three years later, a high school student named Chuck Hayes began working for the Altebaumers, helping with odd jobs and yard work after school. What began as a small job soon became a calling.

In 1977, Chuck married the Altebaumers’ eldest daughter, Lynnette. He went on to study Mortuary Science at the University of Central Oklahoma and became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. Together, Chuck and Lynnette built not just a life, but a shared purpose in caring for families.

In 2000, the Altebaumers made the difficult decision to sell the funeral home to a larger corporation. Though no longer the owners, they remained committed to its mission until J.W.’s passing in 2002.

In 2008, the opportunity arose to bring the funeral home back into the family. Sue, Chuck, and Lynnette didn’t hesitate. With full hearts and clear purpose, they returned the business to its roots—family-owned, family-operated, and deeply committed to the people of Guthrie.

With great care, Chuck and Lynnette chose a new name that honored their journey and the legacy they inherited: Hayes Funeral Home.

From the beginning, this has always been about more than a building—it’s about serving with heart, honoring every life, and walking alongside families with compassion and care. That’s who we’ve been since 1927. And that’s who we’ll always be.

Chuck Hayes is a longtime Guthrie resident with a heart for service and deep roots in the community. He began working at the funeral home as a teenager under the guidance of his future in-laws, J.W. and Sue Altebaumer—mowing lawns, lending a hand, and quietly learning the values of care and compassion.

After graduating from Guthrie High School in 1976, Chuck attended the University of Central Oklahoma’s Mortuary Science program. In 1993, he earned his licenses as a Funeral Director and Embalmer and stepped into the role of assistant manager.
